Voice of the Wind: Taiwanese Fashion Show to Feature African Drumming

Fashion Show Picture

Fashion Show Picture

Joy is  designing and producing the  opening performance for 三宅一生 Issey Miyake‘s fashion show on March 6 in Taiwan. The effort in Taiwan seeks to incorporate African Drumming into an well known Japanese clothing designer’s Fashion Show.

Joy was inspired to create the piece seeing it as a way to link “our way of living in the modern day to the indigenous culture and people…”

Joy adds: “We are making it a story about a seeker connecting to mother earth and nature and spirit to evolve… for truth and life.” Joy feels that in this way “the ‘stage’ is for awakening the minds of the people on a planetary level.

The performance will integrate West African drumming and Taiwanese tribal music. It is called Voice of the Wind and will feature several African Drums and also a choreographed dance routine with the drummers moving around throughout the performance.  This African element will be combined with a ‘nose flute’ – a Taiwan tribal music instrument and will also feature a Taiwanese tribal vocalist.

The voice represents the wind, while the flute player is a Kokopelli that interacts with the earth (African  Dunduns – mother drums’ voice) and the human beings (the djembe player as a seeker). The interwoven nature of the sounds represents the harmonious interaction among earth, spirit and human beings. The integration of the sounds are designed in the performance to bring out the best in us by encouraging us to pursue and seek out harmony in how we live and interact with the world.

Stage Arrangement

The stage is anchored with DUNDUNs (Mother’s Voice of the drum) on one end of the walkway and the sound of a woman on the other end. The Dunduns consist of 3 levels of sounds. This serves to enrich the foundation of the performance, while the vocalist evokes sounds that reflect the collective energy of the audience, performers, designer and the theme of the artist expression.

The flutest and djembe player will be fluidly moving around on the stage playing dual roles as both musicians and dancers.

The mixture of the sounds and the dance movements during the performance welcomes the creation of the fashion design show and builds up audience excitement in anticipation of the main event.

Custume Arrangement

The vocalist will be dressing in white to represent purifying voice to hear the inner thought of artistic performance. Drummers / dancers and the flutest will be dressing in colorful outfit made by Africa motif and fabric.

All performers will be wearing masks to disguise the identity of the players. It is to suggest that we all come from different places yet we meet in the unity of the music of different traditions. We represent unity in diversity and diversity in unity!

Nice!!! It feels really good, and really tuned in to the deeper rhythms of life and awareness. Sound, presence, dance, color, convergence of human identities, and meaning — each given enough time and space to connect with heart and mind. Have a wonderful performance!
