09.30.09 | Brussels Belgium: OVF to Present at Digital World Forum Wrap-up Conf

The DWF Closing Event of the Digital World Forum (DWF) European project will summarize what the DWF has done in relation to understanding the options that exist for low-cost ICTs in emerging markets and consider the way forward.

  • Speaker List – The Digital World Forum (DWF) agreed to the fund Joy Tang’s travel costs from Taiwan to Brussels to keynote at the closing conference for the DWF on September 30th.
  • Register – You can register online for this free event here.
  • Agenda - The DWF Closing Event Agenda is here.

The aim of the DWF project was to study low-cost ICT technologies to deploy in developing countries, and more specifically low-cost laptops, low-cost broadband wireless infrastructure, and mobile. One focus point of the DWF was the Mobile Web for Social Development Roadmap (see MW4D wiki). Its the most recent and last document for the partnership and was prepared under the leadership of France Telecom’s Orange Labs.

Joy as one of the keynote speakers will underline the potential of low-cost technologies in development and the need for future funding and research. She will discuss the opportunity to further the impact of these kinds of research efforts by connecting this knowledge to empower the field efforts of ICT4D program like our Open Digital Village Program.

The ICOS 2009 oneVillage Community Day and DWF presentations are part of a strategy to advance oneVillage Initiative, with the theme “Dissemination of Innovation“. This idea explains the new emerging relationships connecting and intersecting design, development and deployment in the ICT4D that we are working on as we incorporate Open Source tech in the field in Ghana.

During the approximately 18 months of the DWF project duration, OVF Ghana partook in the research and designing of the roadmap. They distributed questionnaires and then collected and collated them; organized online discussions with the DWF Ning platform, etc., all to triangulate data collection and validation into the final roadmap.

OVF Ghana’s Kafui Prebbie says that “There is alot to learn from the Roadmaps. If we see ODiV as a development vehicle, then we could incorporate some of the ideas from the low cost access devices, mobile web for social development, etc. to enrich our ODiV program outlook and impact.”

Kafui will be traveling along with Joy and OVF Ghana Business Development Manager Jacob Odame, to discuss the next steps for the DWF project along with the other partners.
