10.17.09 | Taipei, Taiwan: OVF’ Joy Tang to Speak at TEDx Taipei about OVF Ecotour
We are now preparing documentation for a presentation at TEDx Taipei on Oct 17th. The event will focus on the oneVillage Ecotour Service and Learning Program
The brief, six minute presentation will focus on the OVF Ectour Program and how its creating links between Taiwan and Ghana to facilitate new development model that is more grassroots/community oriented. We see this as a way to address the relative isolation of Taiwan in terms of diplomatic status, while promoting a new holistic development model that effectively uses Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) to facilitate end to end human services (also known as Peer to Peer (P2P) Networks & Technologies). We believe that this approach has global implications to promote sustainable development and appropriate technologies that extend beyond a traditional approach to development that focuses on developing countries.
Recently in August of 2009 ten students were sent from Taiwan’s Tsing Hua University (NTHU) International Volunteers Program to embark upon a life-changing journey in Winneba, Ghana. There they worked with oneVillage’s Ecotour Service and Learning program at the Winneba Open Digital Village (WODiV).
During the presentation we will discuss how during the four week trip, the NTHU students succeeded in the following tasks:
- Provided basic ICT training for junior high school students and their teachers as part of the New Academic Year IT School.
- Produced a digital archive for the Denkyira Kingdom.
- Wrote a comprehensive report on the Jukwa Farmer’s Coop that highlighted the various needs of the program. Designed a new and improved palm oil processing facility to improve their efficiency and condition.
- Documented African drum production and led an investigation and study of the forest habitat region at Okurase.
- Attended Maker Faire Africa.
The efforts of the students have aligned past successes with limitless possibilities in the areas of community empowerment and development. In addition, it has allowed for a more effective use of the technologies, and increased the potential of the WODiV’s Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D) that would not be possible without Open Source technologies. This process highlights the benefits of OVF’s development and deployment of young, talented minds.
